Male giraffe display a unique ‘necking’ behaviour, usually used to establish dominance for access to females. This video is of young males practising their ‘necking’ skills – watch for one in particular who has developed a specialised tactic!

In May 2010 sadly a young giraffe (approx 4 weeks old) died of natural causes. The herd's behaviourfollowing this was very unusual, with several herd members repeatedly inspecting the carcass. They remained in the area for several days and the mother stayed alone, standing next to her dead calf. Read an article on this here.  This video shows some of the behaviour exhibited by herd members a few hours after death.

in February 2012, the Rothschild's Giraffe Project was involved in a record-breaking giraffe translocation in Kenya, where eight giraffe had to be moved to a new home..... by BOAT!

Eight giraffe were taken from Soysambu Conservancy and moved to the newly formed Ruko Conservancy next to Lake Baringo. This move was an effort to re-introduce Rothschild's giraffe into an area where they used to live but have not been seen there since the 1970s. These eight giraffe will form the basis of a new population and hopefully lead to population growth for the future.

PART 2 - shows the translocation accross Lake Baringo in a boat!
